Valve has made two notable investments over the past months. The first one is the continuance of its development in "CS:Source." Various patches have been released, and an increasing segment of the community agrees that "Source" is finally improving to meet the standards of a competitive game. Hardly any game developer keeps on improving a game so long after its release, so there must be a reason to all of this. And that all leads to one reason in the end... money.
(...) However indirectly, having "Counter-Strike: Source" on television during the CGS will be a perfect marketing tool to promote this game to those kids that want to be like their new heroes, or those that have never touched a video game at all. There is a huge market of youngsters out there that have not been reached yet in an "(inter)active" way of marketing that CGS is providing them. Even though this is eS-ports and mainly aimed for those interested in competitive gaming, this will appeal to all the casual gamers out there.
The next big round for event organizers is pushing their events on television. DIRECTV and CBS are the ones who have shown interest over the past months, but they are certainly not interested in some tournament that cannot be broadcast in front of a large audience. If this rumor is true, Valve has certainly just put an end to the domination of CS 1.6 to continue as the 5v5 e-Sports game.
(...) With CGS not having a TV license for 1.6, I highly doubt WSVG will get one either. Of course if the WSVG will run events such as LANWAR, CS 1.6 could be a featured game, but to lay down a stable structure for a year-round tournament, it will need a game that is allowed to be broadcasted on TV. So the question is: What will be left for them?
